About Fanlistings

What is a Fanlisting? A fanlisting is simply an online listing of fans of a certain subject (such as a TV show, actor, or musician) that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join. There are no costs, and the only requirements to join a fanlisting are your name, email address, and country. TheFanlistings.org is the original web directory for fanlistings, dedicated to uniting the fans.
In this case, the fanlisting is for Ireland, and was created by Sasha. If you're still not sure what a fanlisting is, please read Fanlistings 101 for more information!

About Ireland

I first visited Ireland in October 2000. I met up with two friends in Belfast, and we travelled around the country for 3 weeks. And in those 3 weeks, I fell head over heels in love with this country. Within 6 months of that trip, I'd quit University (I was in my second year at the University of Amsterdam at the time) and moved to Ireland to live there. That was how big an impression Ireland made on me. I have never visited a more beautiful country in the world, and I have never met a people more friendly. Ireland is magnificent, with its hills and mountains, cliffs and beaches, forests and ancient ruins. It's a country that breathes history everywhere you look. It's magical, and I hope I will get to live here for a long time to come.

Where to start when talking about Ireland? I guess the basics is a good place!

Ireland (Irish: Éire; Ulster Scots: Airlann) is the third largest island in Europe and the twentieth largest in the world. It lies to the northwest of Continental Europe. To the east of Ireland, across the Irish Sea, is the island of Great Britain. Politically, Ireland is divided into the Republic of Ireland, a sovereign state occupying five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern sixth of the island. The name 'Ireland' derives from the name Ériu (in modern Irish, Éire) with the addition of the Germanic word 'land'.

The population of the island is slightly under six million (2006), with 4,239,848 in the Republic of Ireland (1.7 million in Greater Dublin) and about 1.7 million in Northern Ireland (0.6 million in Greater Belfast).

The island of Ireland has two distinct jurisdictions:

For the political history of the island, see History of Ireland.

Traditionally, Ireland is subdivided into four provinces: Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster (Meath was a province one time, it is now a county), and since the 19th century, 32 counties. Twenty-six of the counties are in the Republic of Ireland, and the remaining six (all in Ulster) are in Northern Ireland. Since 1974, the counties in Northern Ireland only have ceremonial status, being replaced by District Councils. Across Ireland, the 32 traditional counties are still used in sports and in some other cultural areas, and retain a strong sense of local identity.

A ring of coastal mountains surrounds low central plains. The highest peak is Carrauntuohill (Irish: Corrán Tuathail) in County Kerry, which is 1,041 m (3,414 feet). The River Shannon, at 386 km (240 miles) is the longest river in Ireland. The island's lush vegetation, a product of its mild climate and frequent but soft rainfall, earns it the sobriquet "Emerald Isle". The island's area is 84,412 km² (32,591 square miles).

Ireland's least arable land lies in the south-western and western counties. These areas are largely mountainous and rocky, with dramatic green vistas.

Overall, Ireland has a mild, but changeable, climate all year with few extremes. The warmest recorded air temperature was 33.3°C (91.94°F) at Kilkenny Castle, County Kilkenny on 26 June 1887, whereas the lowest recorded temperature was -19.1°C (-2.38°F) at Markree Castle, County Sligo on 16 January 1881.
